Duke’s jazz in New York

And you think we’re spoiled for jazz in London.

Last week, whilst I was in New York, I arranged a night at Dizzy’s – the intimate jazzery attached to the Lincoln Centre overlooking Columbus Square in the heart of Manhattan.

Saturday the 9th was strange day to be there; it was the finale of the Centre’s annual jazz band competition, with musically gifted kids from high schools and colleges around the US wandering the red hallways jittering with adrenaline. I think the lot that I saw were from Juilliard, perhaps America’s premier arts school.
